The Human Mind

Roy stepped out of the ventilation shaft and into the hallway. Glancing around he made his way left past the large murkey windows looking out onto the street. With one hand in his pocket, he fingered a small piece of plastic that was so vital to make everything right..............................

Ok, quick! Don't read what anyone else wrote, just comment and write what you saw in your mind. For example, does Roy have brown hair? Red? Blonde? Purple? How old is he? Etc. Write only what you saw. And if you're over zealous, write more about the story too. :)

To read after you post:
In a flash of not so brilliant light, I thought of the first sentence to this post very randomly. That got me thinking about how different people would see this picture that was in my head if I only wrote down only a few words that were not specific enough to be decisively descriptive. And so I thought I'd share with all of you and see what sort of automatic or generic picture came into your mind and imagination with very little provocation.
When I read the first sentence in a book, I usually get some picture in my head that is shaped as I continue reading by the author's descriptions, and even then I sometimes still stick to my original pictures! So I was just curious as to how everyone else's mind worked too!

  1. Sadly, coming from the school of speed reading (no longer recommended), I was thinking more of the plastic in his hand. I never visualized anything else becasue I didn't think I would need to. I just imagined a credit card. Rather boring, I know...

  2. well I already read Trevor's comment so that got me all hung up on the plastic in his pocket. I think I had in mind some sort of Dr. Who-ish plastic peice that would make everything right. Although I think Roy was blonde.

  3. I guess he has short brown hair and is in his mid 20s. I'm really trying not to read the other comments that are right above mine here. I'm pretty sure he's wearing a navy blue shirt, too, and his pants are a weird fabric - probably like those worn by a janitor but a better quality. Like he's trying to get around unnoticed. OK I'm probably way off with this whole thing so I'm gonna read now!

  4. I saw the whole setting as dingy brown, brown hair as well and the thing in his pocket was an inhaler.

  5. well, I am not quite sure how to do this... since you know I come from the old computer age...Ok for some reason I was cleaning out & came across your site, in my "favorites!" I read your story on the mind... This is what I saw... The man had dark hair, a trench coat & an old time movie hat with a brim. He was looking kind of secretive...He walked down the hallways of the Johnstown High School. It has large windows all along the hallway. He held onto the piece of circular hard plastic in his pocket. The plastic was folded in half & he clicked with his thumb as he walked & look slyly down the hallways. (Not sure what that piece of plastic will be used for. Maybe for scraping gum of your shoes!)...lol ! from your friend...andreba!

  6. After Andreba's great analysis, I'm sure my thought of a credit card held by a brown haired man is not exciting.

  7. Ah man. I was just gonna say, "And then Roy, found a Piano and started playing it! Fini."

  8. Yeah...I was thinking of the plastic object as well... I saw a spoon. A plastic spoon...without the handle. That had been snapped off. Spoons save the world? Haha.
